From study routines to exploring local life in Lincoln, Leicester, Exeter and Newcastle, OR Students’ accommodation helps you balance work and fun.

Tips for Managing Your Free Time at Uni

Starting university is exciting! New friends, new routines and the freedom to decide how you spend your days. But with so many opportunities to socialise with your flatmates and coursemates, so many clubs and societies to join, and of course the compulsion to explore your new city, it’s easy to overfill your calendar. The key? Finding a balance that gives you plenty of time for self study, rest and, of course, having a lot of fun.

Start with a Clear Plan

Whether you prefer a digital planner (we like Todoist and Trello) or a classic wall calendar above your desk, make sure you get your university timetable written out clearly. Then add in your other commitments (like a part time job, sports or society meeting) and the planner will help you see exactly when your free time is. Once you know when your down time is, importantly, you can dedicate regular blocks to study while still making space for fun and relaxation.

Avoid the Cramming Trap

Even when you have your study time mapped out, it’s still tempting to skip self study time and let assignments pile up, but procrastination only adds stress. Aim to start work early and break big tasks into smaller chunks. If you live in student accommodation in Lincoln, student accommodation in Leicester, Exeter University accommodation or student housing in Newcastle, you’ll have the advantage of study spaces nearby, whether that’s your own quiet student studio, a dedicated common room or the university library just a short walk away.

Making the most of your Downtime

Lincoln – From our Lincoln student accommodation, you can walk into the city centre in minutes. On sunny afternoons, head to the Arboretum for a peaceful study break or grab a coffee from one of the many independent cafés near uni.

Leicester – Our Leicester uni accommodation is close to Victoria Park, a perfect spot for a summer picnic or a quick jog. The city also has a great food scene, why not try the local pizza or burger spots with your flatmates after lectures.

Exeter – Living in our Exeter University accommodation means you’re close to both campus and the vibrant city centre. When you need fresh air, take a walk down to Exeter Quayside for waterside cafés, Saturday markets and relaxing views.

Newcastle – If you’re in our student housing in Newcastle, you’ll have the Quayside, Ouseburn, and the city centre within reach. Take a break from studying with riverside walks, live music, or trying a new street food vendor.

Make Time for Yourself

University life can be full on, but remember that not every spare moment has to be productive. Schedule time for activities you enjoy, whether that’s sports, reading, cooking with your flatmates or catching up with friends. Sometimes the best study break is a change of scenery.

Know When to Say No

It’s easy to say yes to every night out, society event or group project. But too many commitments can lead to burnout. It’s fine to decline plans if you need a night to recharge, your friends will understand. Remember, rest is just as important as work.

Use Your Space Wisely

Living close to campus saves time and makes it easier to manage your day. OR Students’ properties are all in fab locations, so you can get to lectures quickly and still have plenty of time for self-study or hobbies. That extra hour not spent commuting could be used to watch Netflix, have a walk with friends or even to get a head start on your next essay.
