The Complete University Packing List – Everything You’ll Want to Bring Along

Starting university is a major milestone and if you’re about to begin your studies, you’re likely feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. Between making new friends, settling into student life, and choosing your student accommodation, there’s plenty to plan. One of the most important tasks? Knowing what to pack.

If the thought of packing is overwhelming, you’re not alone. To make life easier, we’ve gathered tips from students who’ve been there before and created a go-to university packing list. From everyday kitchen items to bedroom must-haves and lecture-day essentials, this guide ensures you’ll be ready for your move.

Whether you’re staying in a student studio or private rental house...

Must-Have University Essentials

Kitchen Musts & Food Essentials

  • Cookware: A compact set of pots and pans will go a long way. A saucepan and non-stick frying pan are your basics. If you’re moving into a shared flat, hold off on bringing too much until you’ve seen what’s already there—many housemates double up on items.
  • Utensils: Stick to key tools like a wooden spoon, mixing bowl, and spatula unless you’re planning gourmet meals.
  • Crockery & Cutlery: A set of plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, and cutlery for four people will cover everyday use and entertaining.
  • Food Storage: Tupperware or reusable containers will be your best friend for leftovers or packed lunches.
  • Small Appliances: Don’t rush out to buy a kettle, microwave, or toaster, some student accommodations already include them.
  • Cupboard Basics: Bring dry goods like pasta, rice, tinned food, sauces, seasonings, and oil to get you started.

Bedroom Essentials

  • Bedding: Pack your own duvet, pillows, and at least two full sets of bed linen. You might also want an extra blanket or pillow for those colder nights or just extra comfort.
  • Mattress Topper: A topper or mattress protector can make a big difference to your sleep quality, especially handy in studio-style student rooms where your bed is your haven. You’ll want to check with us to find out if your accommodation has them included.
  • Hangers: Don’t underestimate how many you’ll need!
  • Storage Solutions: Use under-bed boxes, collapsible laundry baskets, and over-door organisers to make the most of limited space.
  • Study Furniture: Most student rooms include a desk and chair, but if you’re renting independently, double-check what’s provided and ensure you have a decent set-up for long study sessions.
  • Extra Lighting: A desk lamp is usually provided, but if you burn the midnight oil, a second lamp might help with focus and reduce eye strain.

Bathroom Essentials

  • Towels: Bring a couple of bath towels, hand towels, and face cloths or reusable makeup pads.
  • Shower Supplies: Include your favourite shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and a squeegee if you have a private shower.
  • Toiletries: Stock up on daily-use items and don’t forget nail clippers, cotton buds, or any specialty products you use regularly.
  • Basic First Aid: Painkillers, plasters, antiseptic cream, and other basics are good to have on hand.
  • Cleaning Products: A few bathroom cleaners, wipes, and a toilet brush will help you keep things hygienic.

Study Supplies & Tech for Uni Life

  • Laptop: A dependable laptop is crucial. Choose one that suits your course needs and has the storage and specs to last your degree.
  • Chargers & Accessories: From phone and laptop chargers to headphones and USB drives—don’t forget the small but essential accessories.
  • Stationery: Keep a supply of notebooks, pens, and folders for lectures and revision.
  • Organisers: Highlighters, sticky notes, and even a pegboard can help keep track of deadlines and key info, particularly in compact student rooms.
  • Backpack: Choose a durable, well-padded backpack that can comfortably carry your laptop, books, and day-to-day items across campus.
