How to Handle Group Work at University (And Why It Matters More Than You Think)

Group work, you either love it… or you simply tolerate it. Either way, it’s a huge part of university life, your degree as a whole and (whether you realise it yet) your future career.

From quick shared presentations to full-scale projects, group work teaches you skills that employers genuinely care about! Think, communication, teamwork, leadership, compromise, and learning how to get things done even when personalities clash. And sure, group projects can be stressful, but they’re also where you’ll learn the most about yourself and your ability to work with others.

So, whether you’re studying in Lincoln, Leicester or Newcastle, here’s how to survive (and actually succeed in) group work at uni.

Why Group Work Feels So, So, So Hard

Let’s be honest, even if you’re on the same course, putting a group of people together and hoping everything goes smoothly isn’t always realistic. Different work ethics, communication styles and motivation levels all come into play. Someone always works ahead and has their work done way before the deadline. Someone always thrives at working last minute. Someone ghosts the group chat entirely and isn’t remotely interested in the project.

But here’s the thing, when you graduate, this is exactly what the workplace looks like, different strengths, different personalities and one shared goal. Group work gives you real-world experience long before you step into a job interview.

Even if you hate group work, you can use it to your advantage in the future. These (painful) group work experiences become great examples to talk about when applying for internships, placements and graduate roles.

Tips for Making Group Work Easier

1. Set expectations early

Get everyone together online or in person and agree on how you’ll communicate, how often you’ll meet, and who is responsible for what. Getting organised early on stops last minute stress and avoids messy misunderstandings.

2. Keep communication open (even when things get awkward)

If someone isn’t pulling their weight, say something! If you’re struggling with your part, let the group know early. Most clashes in group projects come down to people not talking enough, communication is key to group work.

If you’re staying at College Mews in Lincoln why not use the calm private studios to focus on your part of the assignment before meeting up on campus or in town to compare notes?

3. Use shared tools to stay organised

Google Docs, Trello, Notion, Teams… whatever works. Having everything in one place helps keep the project on track.

In Leicester, students at Hops House, The Oval, and The Button Factory often study together in their shared social spaces before heading to campus. It’s a great way to split tasks and keep each other accountable.

4. Don’t rely on your friends to make the best team

Friends are great… until you disagree over deadlines, effort levels or ideas. Sometimes a mixed group of coursemates works better than sticking to your social circle.

And if you feel that getting to know your coursemates better is really important to making the group project work, if you’re at Step House in Newcastle, the location is ideal for mixing with those in your group, especially with Northumbria and Newcastle University just a walk or bus ride away.

5. Keep the end goal in mind

Group work is rarely perfect, but the overall grade is shared, so regardless of what others are doing focus on producing the best outcome possible, not winning every argument.

Future employers love hearing about how you navigated difficult situations, split tasks fairly or adapted to your group’s needs. It’s all experience you’ll reuse later.

Why Group Work Helps You Beyond Uni

  • You learn to compromise, trust us, this is important
  • You become way better at explaining ideas
  • You understand how to handle conflict calmly
  • You develop leadership skills
  • You learn how to manage different working styles
  • You gain confidence collaborating with strangers

These skills are super important in the job market and group work gives you loads of examples to draw from in interviews.

Group Work Isn’t Easy. But It Is Worth It

Whether you’re completing a simple presentation or a big end-of-term project, the way you handle group work will set you up brilliantly for life after uni. Be patient, be organised, communicate openly and remember everyone is learning as they go.

And if you’re staying at any of our OR Students properties, you’ll always have a great base for studying, collaborating and taking a breather when group work gets intense.
